Planning Success For New Student Accommodation Block In Devizes

Braeside outdoor education centre offers residential outdoor learning experiences for young people and adults. The facilities consist of the main house offering 60 beds in 15 bedrooms, 4 ground floor reception/classrooms and toilets and the office. There are also two ancillary accommodation buildings known as ‘The Beeches’ and ‘The Laurels’. There is a need to replace these buildings which are of a temporary nature and to build high-quality replacement accommodation which is of robust construction and highly energy-efficient. The proposed new building would be sited on the area currently occupied by The Laurels.

The architectural and landscape design of the project would be sympathetic in terms of character, scale, materials and detail. The new elements would respect the existing building and the setting of the site itself. The existing Arts & Crafts architectural style would be respected and reflected but, importantly not copied. It is important that the original building maintains its pre-eminent status and focus within the heart of the site, with new additions such as the proposed accommodation building appearing as respectful ‘attendants’.

This project represents an excellent opportunity to improve the educational facilities at Braeside by upgrading the amount, quality and type of accommodation that would be available for the various school and student groups. This important improvement will help to ensure that Braeside can remain viable and attractive as an educational asset to the town and district.

The proposed design utilises materials, details and architectural forms that are sympathetic and appropriate to the host building, (Braeside) and its context.
