PUMP HOUSE EXTENSION
Where: Hungerford
This rather splendid pump house previously served a relatively large convent, which was subsequently converted to a number of individual apartments at which time, this building became redundant. It was purchased in the 1960s and occupied as a weekend retreat for a great many years, only recently coming to the market via an auction.
Our clients who were hoping to add to the property to make it their permanent dwelling were rather fortunate in that the auction was poorly attended, so they succeeded in the purchase. The next obstacle was to convince the Planning Authority that despite its very modest proportions, it could accept appropriately designed extensions to create a one-bedroom dwelling.
The principal feature of the building is the conical roof so the proposal comprised replacement of the single storey extensions on either side, and to then form a semicircle wrapping around this element. Consent was granted and working drawings produced based on BecoWallform system (ICF - insulated concrete formwork), manufactured to suit the curved walls, which were then clad in timber.
