Modern Replacement Dwelling
Influenced by Arts and Crafts Style Architecture
Where: Marlborough, Wiltshire
Our client purchased a tired 1960s/70s property which didn't reflect the outstanding location. They wanted to build a house which would respect the context of the site and to take advantage of distant views at first floor. It was also an opportunity to create a house of very high quality and which would be suitably energy-efficient.
The house would be set back from the road and approached via a discreet entrance. Each elevation was intended to respond to different aspects of the garden which wrapped around the house. The intention was to use traditional materials and details to create a house with generous doors and windows and with a fairly open-plan interior. A first floor sitting area was required, (as well as conventional bedrooms) to provide a comfortable area to appreciate the views from that level.
Good quality brickwork and clay tile hanging, with triple-glazed windows within a modern house that has a deliberately Arts & Crafts style inspiration.
